Flat Tow Compatibility Checker

The Flat Tow Compatibility Checker tells you whether a vehicle can be flat-towed, with all four wheels down, behind an RV or motorhome. Pick a make, model and year to get a yes or no answer, the required transfer-case and transmission setup, and warnings for 35 vehicles in our flat-tow list.

How this tool works

Select a make, then a model, then a model year. The checker finds the matching entry in TowingServiceHub's flat-tow list, compiled from manufacturer recreational (dinghy) towing guidance. Of the 35 models listed, 22 are approved for flat towing in at least one configuration and 13 are not.

Approved vehicles show the setup the manufacturer requires, such as putting the transfer case in Neutral with the ignition in accessory (ACC) mode, plus warnings like "2WD models are NOT flat-towable." Vehicles that are not approved come with a recommendation to use a tow dolly or flatbed trailer instead. The menus only offer makes, models and years that are in the list, so if yours is missing, check your owner's manual or ask the dealer.

Limitations: approval often depends on drivetrain, transfer case and transmission rather than the model name alone, and procedures change between generations. Always follow the recreational towing section of the owner's manual for your exact vehicle.

Frequently asked questions

Which vehicles can be flat-towed behind an RV?

22 of the 35 models in our list are approved, including the Jeep Wrangler, Jeep Gladiator, Ford Bronco, Toyota 4Runner and 4WD versions of pickups such as the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and RAM 1500. Most need a transfer case that can be shifted to Neutral.

Can you flat tow an all-wheel-drive vehicle?

Usually not. In our list, AWD models such as the Subaru Outback, Jeep Compass and Ford Maverick are not approved. There are exceptions: the Chevrolet Equinox AWD with the 1.5L or 2.0L turbo and the Dodge Durango AWD are approved when the manufacturer's procedure is followed.

Can you flat tow an electric vehicle?

No. Both electric vehicles in our list, the Tesla Model 3 and Tesla Model Y, are marked not flat-towable, with the warning that electric vehicles should never be flat-towed because it can severely damage the drivetrain. Use a flatbed trailer instead.

Can a Jeep Wrangler be flat-towed?

Yes. The Wrangler is approved for model years 2015–2026 in our list. The required setup is: transfer case in Neutral (N), transmission in Park (automatic) or Neutral (manual), ignition in ACC position. Follow the owner's manual procedure every time you hook up.

What if my vehicle isn't in the flat tow checker?

The checker's menus only offer vehicles in our list, so a missing make, model or year means we have no entry for it yet. Check your owner's manual for a section on recreational, dinghy or motorhome towing. If the manual doesn't approve flat towing, use a tow dolly or flatbed trailer.
